WEST FLORIDA WOMEN DROP GSC OPENING TO UAH, 65-54

Boykins leads the Argo effort with 15 points

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- The West Florida women’s squad fell to Alabama-Huntsville, 65-54, in their first official Gulf South Conference. Dominique Boykins (Houston, Texas/North Shore HS) led the charge for the Argoanuts, tallying 15 points on the evening, while Jessica Young (Hillsboro, Ala./Wallace-Hanceville CC) just missed double figures with nine rebounds.

Boykins led the first half for the Argonauts with nine points, while Caitlin Salak (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon HS) provided spark off the bench to snag five rebounds. The teams collaborated for 30 turnovers, but West Florida was able to capitalize for 12 points off turnovers as opposed to the Chargers’ ten.  At the half, the Argos trailed 35-28.

The Argos struggled early in the second half, only able to score two points in the first five minutes.  Salak, however, began the West Florida comeback attempt putting up four consecutive points with just under 10 minutes left. Following an Ashley Boykin three-pointer, the Argos went on a six point drive led by Krissy Diggs (Hillsboro, Ala./Pensacola JC) that diminished the Charger lead to eight at 56-48. But despite heavy Argo defense in the remaining seven minutes, the Chargers held onto their lead for a final score of 65-54.

Kristen Banes matched Boykins 15 points to tie for the game’s leader scorer position. The Argos were able to hold UAH powerhouse Boykin to just 10 points, while Diana Alsbrook added 11 for the Chargers.

The Argo women return to their home court next Thursday, January 15, slated to take on North Alabama at 5pm. Fans can check out all the action through live in-game statistics and broadcast at www.GoArgos.com.
