HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The University of West Florida men’s cross country team participated in the Southern Mississippi Invitational track meet this past weekend in Hattiesburg, Miss. Freshman Christopher Hough (Panama City, Fla./Rutherford HS) was the overall winner in the 3,000 meter steeplechase race. Racing in wet conditions, including an overflowing water pit for one of the jumps, Hough raced to a finish time of 10:28.7 to start off the spring off-season competition with a victory.
Sophomore Andrew Maedel (Orange Park, Fla./Ridgeview HS) and freshman Eddie Pagan (Stuart, Fla./Dade City HS) turned in strong performances in a star-studded 5,000 meter race (3.1 miles). In an event with 17 runners, including two Division I national finalists, Maedel raced to a strong eighth place finish in a time of 16:26 to start off his spring competition. Eddie Pagan competed in his first collegiate 5,000 meter race and ran to a 12th place finish at 17:02. Vincent Rono (unattached) was the overall winner in the rainy 5,000 meter race with a time of 14:47.
The Argos will compete next in the FSU Relays in Tallahassee, Fla. In two weeks. The event takes place from Thursday, March 26th to Saturday, March 28th, with the Argos participating in the 1500 meters, the 5,000 meters, the 10,000 meters, and the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
The West Florida men’s and women’s cross country teams participate in track meets in the spring during the nonchampionship season. Institutions that sponsor men’s or women’s cross country but do not sponsor indoor or outdoor track and field teams may compete in five dates of competition during the nonchampionship season (2008-09 NCAA Division II Manual: 126.96.36.199.1).
