UWF SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH VALDOSTA STATE

Remain in chase for the final spot in the GSC Tournament

VALDOSTA, Ga. —  The University of West Florida baseball team, playing in their final series of the regular season, bounced back from a lopsided 10-0 loss in game one to take down Valdosta State University 6-5 in game two.  The Argos hopes for a post season berth into the Gulf South Conference Tournament next week remain alive with one game left to play in the regular season.

In game one of the doubleheader the Blazers offense proved to be too much for the Argonauts. They would pound out 15 hits along with three homeruns in the contest, taking the 10-0 victory in eight innings.

In game two, the Blazer once again hopped out to an early lead by tacking on a run in the bottom half of the first on a Matt Costello RBI single.

The Argos responded in the third with a run of their own to tie the ballgame up.  Three more Argonaut runs would cross the board in the fourth, capped by a two run homerun by Tyler Hastings to make it 4-1 Argos.

Argos’ starting pitcher John Church would run into trouble in the fifth, allowing three walks and four runs.  The Blazers would cap off the inning on a Shawn Keill base hit through the left side which scored two runs to knot the game up at five.

In the seventh, Jack Materne led off the inning with a walk and would advance to third on a base hit from Greg Pron.  Zach Cates would then deliver a long fly ball to right which allowed Materne to tag up and score from third for the eventual game winner.

The Argos will be back in action tomorrow afternoon in Valdosta, Ga. for the final game of the series against the Blazers with the first pitch scheduled for 1pm ET.
