PENSACOLA, Fla. — The bracket for the 2009 Gulf South Conference Baseball Tournament was released on Monday and West Florida will enter the tournament as the East Division’s No. 4 seed. The Argos, who clinched a berth on the final day of the regular season, will face the West Division’s No. 1 seed Delta State on Saturday afternoon at 1pm in Millington, Tenn.
COMPLETE TOURNAMENT NOTES
This season the Argos have compiled a 31-21 overall record along with an 8-10 mark in GSC play. They have competed against some of the best competition in the nation, tallying a 6-6 record versus Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 30 teams this season. Even with the tough schedule, the Argos have managed to accumulate a number of various accolades throughout the season. Collectively as a team, they have totaled seven GSC Pitcher or Player of the Week awards, including six of 11 Pitcher of the Week honors.
On the mound this season, they have been nothing short of outstanding. They are led by four time GSC Pitcher of the Week, Kevin Johnson and fellow starters Kyle Ramsey and Jon Sintes. In the Argonauts bullpen it has been John Church and freshman Ryan Sorce who have been able to close the door, combining for four saves and a 12-5 record on the mound. Church has put up some phenomenal numbers this season, currently leading the GSC in ERA with a 1.45 and is second in the conference with 85 strikeouts.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Argos are batting a solid .304 as a team. Catcher/left fielder Tyler Hastings leads the team with a .352 average followed by everyday right fielder Greg Pron who is batting .350. Leading the team in RBIs this season is senior third baseman Lee Huggins who has driven in 35 runs while batting .311.
The Argos return to the GSC Tournament for the first time since 2007 when the Argonauts took home the school’s first ever GSC Baseball Championship. All-time the Argos have posted an 11-8 record since making its first tournament appearance in 2003.
