PENSACOLA, Fla. — The No. 2 University of West Florida women’s soccer team posted five first half goals en route to a 7-0 shutout over NAIA Mobile on Wednesday night at the UWF Soccer Complex. Shakira Duncan (Kingston, Jamaica/Darton College) led the way for the Argonauts supplying two goals and two assists in a match that saw three Argos net two goals each.
Reining Gulf South Conference Player of the Week Shaneka Gordon (Old Harbour, Jamaica/Community College of Baltimore) got the West Florida offense going early when she connected with Duncan inside the box to net the Argos first goal of the match. The Argos kept on the attack and would net four goals over the next 20 minutes. Jordan Stone (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./Fort Walton Beach HS) would add a pair of goals while Monica Malavassi (San Jose, Costa Rica/Methodist HS) and Duncan would add a goal each to give the Argos a 5-0 cushion before the half.
After halftime the Argo offense picked up right where they left off. Gordon would connect with Duncan once again in the 50th minute on a one touch shot inside the 18 to make it 6-0. Despite the 6-0 lead the West Florida offense did not let up. Duncan would once again find the back of the net for the second time in the match in the 55th minute, connecting with Malavassi, to give the Argos the eventual 7-0 victory.
West Florida fired off 22 shots in the match to just three from Rams offense. Rams All-American keeper Anna Maddox saw plenty of action in the match, collecting five total saves.
The Argos next match will come next Tuesday, September 22nd when former GSC rival Montevallo comes into town to try and knock off the No. 2 Argos. The women’s match will be at 7:30pm following the men’s match at 5pm CT.
