Savages Hat Trick Helps Defeat Badgers
PENSACOLA, FLA Keith Savage scored three second
half goals as West Florida used a four-goal second half to knock
off NAIA foe Spring Hill College, 4-1, Friday at the UWF Soccer
Complex. With the win, the Argonauts record now stands at 2-2-1.
Spring Hill falls to 1-3. West Florida improved their all-time
record against Spring Hill to 15-0-1.
Spring Hill opened the scoring in the 34th minute of the first
half. Sean Simpson went driving towards the net from the right
side and knocked in a shot past Argonaut goalkeeper Matt Gascoigne
to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead.
But West Florida responded with their biggest offensive half of
the season in the second half. Savage started his scoring spree
with a goal in the 50th minute from about 12 yards on an assist
from Ryan Teague. West Florida followed with two goals in a span
of just over a minute. At the 75:20 mark, Jay Mainville scored
off of a rebound from a shot by Mason Hupp to give the Argonauts
a 2-1 advantage. Savage followed 1:06 later from inside the box
on an assist from Zaheer Bell. Savage finished off the scoring
with less than a minute to play on a successful penalty kick.
Savage recorded his second career hat trick. He now the leads
the squad with six goals on the season. West Florida out shot
Spring Hill, 35-11, and held a 14-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Gascoigne collected five saves for his second victory of the season.
West Florida will complete their two-match home stand on Sunday with a match against Sunshine State Conference opponent Eckerd. The match will begin at 12:30 pm.
