BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The West Florida women’s basketball team will enter the Gulf South Conference Tournament as the No. 4 seed from the East Division, and the Argonauts will face West Division Co-Champion Arkansas Tech in the first round, it was announced by the conference office Saturday night. The Argos and Golden Suns will meet on Thursday, March 4 at 2:45 p.m. at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Miss. UWF (14-13, 4-6) will be making its 10th GSC Tournament appearance and first since 2007.
No. 7 Arkansas Tech (25-2, 12-2) finished the year tied with No. 9 Delta State (23-2, 12-2) at the top of the West Division. After each tiebreaker scenario was exhausted for the co-champions, it came down to a coin flip, and Arkansas Tech won the toss and the right to be the No. 1 seed from the West.
The Argonauts, looking for their first GSC championship, will face a tough test in their first round meeting with the Golden Suns. Arkansas Tech holds a 3-0 record over West Florida in GSC Tournament play, as the Golden Suns knocked out the Argonauts in three straight years in 1998-2000, including 1998 when UWF was the tournament host and advanced to the championship game, only to lose to ATU 64-70.
