BOCA RATON, Fla. – The No. 7 West Florida men’s tennis team (3-3, 1-0 GSC) came very close to upsetting No. 4 Lynn (9-2) at the Perper Tennis Complex in Boca Raton, Fla. Tuesday. The Argonauts fell to the Fighting Knights in a 5-4 match, almost defeating another regional opponent this season. Lynn was stronger than West Florida in doubles, earning a point advantage, while both teams split three matches a piece in singles.
The Argonauts dropped matches at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, and only won in the top spot. In the third doubles junior Patrick Bateman (Apopka, Fla./Seminole CC) and sophomore Nathan Rosenfeld (Miami, Fla./Miami International) fell to George Laffey and Tomas Racak 8-3. In the second spot sophomores Andrey Pozhidaev (Sochi, Russia) and Mike Lue (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Augustine Catholic HS) fell 8-6 to No. 5 nationally ranked team of Alex Voirin and Luca Pavanelli from Lynn. The Argonauts bounced back with No. 3 team in the nation formed by sophomore Kevin Ducros (Aix-en-Provence, France) and freshman Leandro Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Antonio Afonso) defeating Alessandro Sarra and Willi Wolfer. The Fighting Knights earned the 2-1 lead after doubles.
In singles both teams were able to pick up three victories each. Bateman dropped a 6-1, 6-2 match to Voirin at the No. 5 singles. The Argos responded with a win in the top spot, as No. 12 Ducros upset No. 8 Sarra in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Ferreira fell 6-4, 6-1 to No. 19 Racak from Lynn in the No. 2 singles, giving the Fighting Knights the 4-2 lead over the Argos. No. 43 Pozhidaev upset No. 32 Pavanelli 6-4, 6-4 in the third singles spot. Rosenfeld had a set lead over Wolfer and dropped 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles, securing Lynn the team win over West Florida. In the remaining match on court, Sean Gunnels (Mobile, Ala./Murphy HS) came back from a set down, pushing Laffey to a super tiebreaker. Gunnels earned the victory when Laffey retired from the match feeling cramps when the score was 6-7, 7-5, 4-1 as the Argonauts’ sixth player. Rounding up the scores, the Fighting Knights earned a 5-4 win over the Argonauts.
With the loss, the West Florida men’s tennis team drops to a 3-3 overall record. The No. 7 Argonauts will next face No. 2 Barry (8-0) on Wednesday, March 10th at 2:00 pm ET.
