NO. 9 WOMEN'S TENNIS OUTLASTED BY NO. 5 BARRY

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The No. 9 West Florida women’s tennis team (3-4, 1-0 GSC) faced No. 5 Barry (8-0) this Wednesday, March 10th and dropped its fourth match of the season, second match to a regional opponent. The match was fought toe-to-toe and could have gone either way, but the Buccaneers were stronger than the Argonauts as they only dropped a match in singles and a match in doubles to earn the 7-2 win.

In doubles Barry was able to win at No. 1 and No. 2 spots to earn the lead. The Argos earned their point in doubles when freshman Mariana Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Ateneu HS) and junior Barbara Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Seminole CC) defeated Julie Stas and Darina Yablonskaya 8-4 in the third spot. Senior Paulina Ojeda (Santiago, Chile/Benedictine) and freshman Luiza Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Ateneu HS) fell 8-4 to Angie Werschel and Mia Fiocca at No. 2 doubles. Junior Taylor Brewster (Fergus, Ontario/Centre Wellington District HS) and sophomore Caitlyn Baines (Ft Walton Beach, Fla./Choctawhatchee HS) saved three match points to push Barbi Pocza and Yulia Kashelkina to a tiebreaker in the No. 1 doubles. However, the Argonaut pair dropped the tiebreaker and fell 9-8, giving the Bucs the 2-1 lead entering the singles action.

In singles the Bucs won five out of six matches as the Argonauts only captured a win at No. 3 spot. The Bucs earned the 3-1 lead when No. 33 Ojeda fell 6-4, 6-2 to No. 10 Werschel in the second singles. The Argonauts responded when Brewster defeated Kashelkina 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 at the No. 3 singles. Baines played No. 4 and dropped a 6-1, 6-3 match to Caroline Wendling, giving the Bucs the 4-2 lead. No. 16 Oliveira had a set advantage against Pocza at the top singles. The match took longer than four hours and Pocza came back to defeat Oliveira in the third set 6-7, 6-2, 7-5, giving Barry the team win over the Argonauts. The remaining matches were also won by the Bucs at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Luiza Sonnervig fell 6-2, 6-2 to Fiocca in the fifth singles, while sister Mariana Sonnervig fell 7-5, 6-2 to Berit Peterson in the sixth spot, ending the day with a 7-2 score for the Bucs.

The West Florida women’s tennis now drops to a 3-4 overall record. The Argonauts will now take on No. 13 California of Pennsylvania (7-3) on Thursday, March 11th.
