BATON ROUGE, La. – The UWF women’s cross country team competed in the LSU Gold Invitational track meet in Baton Rouge, La., this past Saturday. With performances in the 800 meters, 1500 meters, and the 5000 meters, the Argos tested themselves against some top notch competition. Freshman Megan Steinocher (Lawrenceville, Ga./Mill Creek HS) was one of the top finishers for UWF with a 5:01 time in the 1500 meter event.
Steinocher led for much of the race, and finished just behind the leaders with the best 1500 meter time of the season for UWF. Meanwhile, freshman Karyssa Tourelle-Fallon (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS) clocked a 5:18 for the event, with sophomore Stacy Paton (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) just behind in 5:22. Freshman Celenne Morfin (Winter Haven, Fla./Lake Region HS) also competed in the event and finished with a 5:41 time. 34 competitors raced in the 1500 meters in three different heats.
Tourelle-Fallon also competed in both the 1500 meters and the 800 meter event and clocked a 2:37 for the 800 meter race. This was just five seconds off the top UWF 800 meter time this season.
Meanwhile, sophomore Kelbe Beck (Tallahassee, Fla./Lincoln HS) and freshman Danielle Cureton (Cumming, Ga./Forsyth Central HS) competed in the 5000 meters. Beck would finish in 14th place with a race time of 19:16. Cureton cruised to a 22:08 time for the event that featured 27 runners and was won by Amy Guinn of McNeese State in a time of 17:40
The LSU Gold Invitational meet marked the conclusion of the Argonauts’ spring season, with the best performances including Steinocher with a 5:01 in the 1500 meters at LSU and Paton who clocked a 2:32 time in the 800 meters at South Alabama. The best 5000 meter time belonged to sophomore Bailee Hedstrom (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease HS), who broke her own 5000 meter track time by racing to an 18:03 finish at the FSU relays.
