INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – No. 10 West Florida will make a 14th straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championships, it was announced on Wednesday. The Argonauts will head to Miami Shores, Fla. on May 6-8 for the five-team preliminary round tournament hosted by No. 4 Barry, and UWF will face No. 9 Rollins in the second round on Friday, May 7 after a first round bye.
The winner of the five-team tournament will earn a trip to the 16-team single elimination national championship tournament held in Altamonte Springs, Fla. on May 12-15.
UWF is one of 10 teams selected to the tournament from the South Region, with five teams heading to one of two host sites. No. 4 Barry will host one half of the regional, as No. 2 Lynn will serve as the other host. The other four teams on the Argonauts’ side of the region are Barry, Rollins, No. 28 Delta State, and No. 34 Palm Beach Atlantic. Delta State and Palm Beach Atlantic will face each other in the first round, with the winner advancing to face host Barry. The winner of that match will face the winner of the Rollins-West Florida match to determine who will advance to the round of 16.
The Argonauts have reached the NCAA postseason 14 straight seasons dating back to 1997, highlighted by four trips to the NCAA semifinals and one to the Division II championship match in 2007. UWF holds a record of 36-14 in NCAA Tournament play, marking the most wins and the top winning percentage (.720) of any Gulf South Conference school.
Last season UWF advanced to the finals of the regional preliminary round hosted by Valdosta State, falling to the host Lady Blazers 5-0. That marked the first time the Argonauts have not advanced to the round of 16 since 1997, largely thanks to the regional restructuring of the tournament.
