ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – For the first time since 2005, the West Florida softball team has been honored with Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American selections, as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Wednesday. Senior Shannon Miles (Shreveport, La./Bossier Parrish CC), a two-time NFCA all-region selection, was named to the All-America third team as she finishes her UWF career. Sophomore Amber Ingram (Pensacola, Fla./Catholic HS), also an NFCA all-region pick this year, was named to the All-America second team.
In addition to being named as a Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American, Miles became the first Argonaut softball member to be named a Daktronics All-American, landing a place on the second team. She was one of just two Gulf South Conference players to be honored by sports information directors in Division II, as all Daktronics All-Americans are selected in a vote by SIDs.
“We are extremely proud of Amber and Shannon's performances this season,” said head coach Tami Cyr. “They are a direct reflection of the level of success that the Argonaut softball team enjoyed this year. It is a tremendous achievement to be honored among the nation's elite; it is the pinnacle of all the hard work that goes into being a college athlete. It is a great way for Shannon to end her very successful career at UWF and for Amber it is a challenge for her to maintain this level of success for two more seasons.”
Just four softball players have been honored All-Americans since UWF joined Division II in 1994, while Miles and Ingram become the fifth and sixth. Miles rounds out a successful career as UWF’s first baseman/designated player, hitting .363 in her two-year career. Alongside an efficient batting average, Miles lead the team in homeruns and RBI both years, finishing with a total of 23 and 117 respectively.
Ingram has made a name for herself early in her career, becoming one of the top young players in the Gulf South Conference last season, and now being recognized by coaches across the nation. Ingram hit .257 as a leadoff batter this year, and rewarded the Argos with a .418 average in 2010 when moved to hit in the three hole. Her defensive skills as a corner infielder have caught the eye of opponent coaches in her first two years, while collecting 74 hits this season and a team-high 16 doubles. Ingram’s speed is reflected in her 13 stolen bases and 58 runs, while a patient eye at the dish earned her a team-high 35 walks.
The Argonauts closed one of their best seasons in recent years with a 40-16 record, finishing their season at this year’s South Region tournament in Valdosta, Ga.
