2008-09 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT UPDATE

2008-09 UPDATE

The UWF Athletics Department will be working with the local Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter this year.  Student-athletes from various sports will be involved in mentoring local students at Ferry Pass Middle School.  These athletes help children reach their potential through one-on-one relationships that will contribute to brighter futures, stronger schools, and stronger communities for all.  A caring mentor sharing everyday expereinces with a child is part of the core premise of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

UWF female student-athletes will participate in the Girl Scouts Girl's Day on Saturday, January 31 from 1 to 3 p.m.  Five hundred girls from the second- to twelfth-grade will pack the UWF intramural fields as they are taught sports that will include soccer, golf, basketball, taekwondo, disc golf, dancing, softball, volleyball, and tennis.  A career exposition will also feature UWF female student-athletes as they encourage and motivate our local girl scouts.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at UWF will consist of two chosen athletes from each sports team.  These athletes will meet in open forums with UWF Athletics representatives to deal with each sport's issues, questions, and concerns.  The SAAC will also plan and organize the fund-raising event for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which is also sponsored by the Gulf South Conference SAAC.  Last year, the Gulf South Conference recognized UWF as the highest contributor to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which was directly related to the work of the UWF SAAC.  The fund-raising event this year will be a field day for student-athletes, who will sell tickets to the Cordova Mall Evening of Giving.  Each sold ticket will contribute $7 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and $3 to the Simon Youth Foundation.
