Hoover, Ala. – The University of West Florida men’s cross country team finished second overall today at the Gulf South Conference (GSC) cross country meet. At the 8k meet held in Hoover, Ala., Argo Seth Rosonina was named Freshman of the Year. Overall, six UWF men were named to the All-GSC teams.
Freshman Seth Rosonina (Mims) paced the Argos with a time of 26:10.42. He finished fifth overall. As the highest finishing freshman, he was named the GSC Top Freshman. This is the first time Rosonina has been the top finisher for the Argonauts.
“Seth was named GSC Freshman of the Year. He has had a great year and worked really hard,” said Bergen. “He’s very mentally tough. He had a couple of good races at the end of the year.”
Eddie Pagan, a sophomore from Stuart, Fla., was the second Argo to cross the finish line with a time of 26:26.83, earning eighth place. Rosonina and Pagan were both named First Team All-GSC. The top 10 finishers are automatically named to the First Team All-GSC list.
Four more Argonauts finished in the top 20. Junior Christopher Hough (Panama City) was the third Argo finisher with a time of 26:47.86. The time was good enough to earn him 15th place overall. He was followed by Jared Black (Tallahassee) in the 16th position with a time of 26:50.15. Sophomore Dominique Sykes (Orange Park) finished 19th with a time of 26:57.68. P.J. Orgass (Spring Hill) finished just behind Sykes in the 20th spot with a time of 27:01.11. These four Argo men were named Second Team All-GSC. The 11-20th finishers are automatically named Second Team All-GSC.
“P.J. was in 23rd with just over a mile to go and was able to get three more spots,” explained Bergen. “It was a real great performance from P.J. today.”
Two additional Argonauts ran in the race. Martinique Sykes (Orange Park) finished 35th overall with a time of 28:23.47. Junior Tyler Bowman (Pensacola) finished in 28:35.62 for a 41st place showing.
“I am very proud of the mean as a team. They push each other,” Bergen stated. “To have six runners in the top 20 is great.”
The UWF men finished second overall with 63 points. Harding captured the top spot with 24 points. Harding has won 10 of the last 11 men’s titles. Harding’s men took the top three individual spots, with Daniel Kirwa finishing first with a time of 25:15.50. Philip Biwott and Wojciech Kopec took second and third, respectively. Alabama-Huntsville finished third with 113 points. West Alabama and West Georgia rounded out the top five.
“Our momentum is in the direction we want it to be in going into the national qualifying meet,” said assistant coach Neil McDonagh. “The energy is infectious at the moment and is putting us right where we want to be.”
The UWF men’s cross country team will compete in the NCAA South Regional on Saturday, November 20th. The 10k meet is hosted by Alabama-Huntsville. Results from the meet will be available on GoArgos.com. The top two teams in the region will advance to the NCAA Championships to be held on December 4th. No UWF men’s cross country team has ever advanced to the NCAA Championships.
