MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 5 University of West Florida women’s tennis team (2-1) dropped a 6-3 match to Auburn Montgomery, a NAIA participant, today in Montgomery, Ala. Auburn Montgomery is currently the No. 2 team in the NAIA. The loss is UWF’s first this season.
UWF won the No. 3 doubles position by default, as Auburn Montgomery did not have enough players to fill in the lineup. The Argonauts fell at the No. 1 and No. 2 lines, giving Auburn Montgomery the 2-1 lead going into singles play. Argonauts Taylor Brewster (Fergus, Ontario) and Luiza Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil) fell at the No. 1 line, 3-8, to Jade Curtis and Kveta Hajkova, who are currently listed as the No. 3 doubles duo in the NAIA. Caitlyn Baines (Ft. Walton Beach) and Jacqueline March (Santa Rosa Beach) fell at the No. 2 position, 3-8, to the No. 4 (NAIA) duo of Ana Veselinovic and Morgane Zowczak.
UWF was only able to capture victories at the No. 2 and No. 6 singles lines, and the Argonauts fell to Auburn Montgomery, 6-3. Sonnervig defeated No. 27 (NAIA) Hajkova, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) at the No. 2 position. Naomi Higa (Cordoba, Argentina) won by default at the No. 6 line. Brewster fell at No. 1 to No. 9 (NAIA) Jade Curtis, 1-6, 2-6. Baines was defeated, 3-6, 2-6, at the No. 3 position by No. 26 (NAIA) Zowczak. March dropped her match at No. 4, 2-6, 1-6, to No. 3 (NAIA) Veselinovic. Mariana Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil) fell, 6-7, 2-6, to No. 15 (NAIA) Alina Tseplukhova.
The Argo men and women will be on the road this weekend. The UWF women will face No. 3 Lynn and No. 10 Rollins, while the men, who are currently No. 8 in the nation, will face No. 5 Lynn and No. 6 Rollins. UWF will face Lynn on Friday, Feb. 18th, at 10 a.m. and Rollins on Saturday, Feb. 19th, at 10 a.m. All four matches will be neutral matches played in Valdosta, Ga.
