NO. 5 UWF WOMEN'S TENNIS DEFEATS NO. 30 GEORGIA COLLEGE & STATE, 7-2

West Florida Tallies Second Victory of the Week

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 5 University of West Florida women’s tennis team (13-9, 4-0) defeated No. 30 Georgia College & State (9-4), 7-2, today at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex on the UWF campus. The win is UWF’s second of the week. Georgia College is in the Southeast Region, while West Florida is in the South Region.

UWF tallied wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles positions. At No. 2, Caitlyn Baines (Ft. Walton Beach) and Taylor Brewster (Fergus, Ontario) defeated May Johnson and Michelle Lingner, 8-1. Baines and Brewster are currently listed as the No. 5 doubles tandem in the South Region. Yana Bokareva (Moscow, Russia) and Hannah Durham (Hammond, La.) recorded an 8-4 victory over Kelly Edwards and Lisa Setyon at No. 3. Bertille Lion and Kayla Barksdale, the No. 8 doubles duo in the Southeast Region, defeated UWF’s Jacqueline March (Santa Rosa Beach) and Luiza Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil), 8-5, at the No. 1 line.

The Argonaut women won five of the six singles matches. At the No. 1 position, Brewster defeated Lion, 6-3, 6-0. Lion is the No. 13 singles player in the Southeast Region. Luiza Sonnervig defeated May, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2. The match at No. 3 went to three sets, but March was able to defeat Barksdale, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. Baines dropped just two games as she defeated Kim Lochner, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot. UWF freshman Durham tallied a three-set, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, victory over Linger at No. 6. Georgia College’s lone singles point came at No. 5, where Setyon defeated Argonaut Naomi Higa (Córdoba, Argentina), 7-5, 3-6, 10-5.

UWF will face Delta State on Sunday at 9 a.m. Although both teams are in the Gulf South Conference, Delta State is in the West and UWF is in the East. Thus, the match will not count in conference standings. The match will be played at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex on the UWF campus.
