SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The West Florida baseball team held its spot at No. 3 receiving three first place votes in this week’s National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II national poll released on Tuesday. The Argonauts also remained No. 1 in the South Region receiving seven first place votes. Emporia State and Mount olive stayed No. 1 and No. 2 respectively in the NCBWA while Florida Southern jumped from fifth place to second in the regional poll.
The Argonauts continue their success riding a program best 14 game winning streak, surpassing the 2002 12 game winning streak. The Argos remained ranked No. 3 in the Collegiate Baseball National Poll and No. 2 in the Collegiate Baseball Lineup.
West Florida is 28-4 on the season with a 7-1 conference recorded. A large part of the Argos success is thanks to their stellar pitching staff which posts a team 2.58 ERA and is holding opponents to a .217 average. Jason Postill (Orlando, Fla./Tallahassee CC (Winter Springs HS) and Ben Hawkins (Rome, Ga./Wallace State CC-Hanceville (Model HS) lead the Argo starters both a 7-0 record. True Freshman Kevin Peters (4-1) (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater HS) has been the utility guy on the mound for West Florida holding opponents to a .158 average.
Offensively the Argos post a team .337 average and have outscored opponents 244-99. Greg Pron (Daphne, Ala./Daphne HS) continues to lead the team batting .409 with 13 doubles. Dustin Lawley (Bessemer, Ala./Wallace State CC-Hanceville (Bessemer Academy) has supplied the power for West Florida blasting a team high five homeruns with a .355 average.
