PENSACOLA, Fla. – After winning the first game 6-2, the No. 3 West Florida baseball team used a 10-run second inning to run away with a 22-6 victory in the second game to sweep visiting Lambuth in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at Jim Spooner Field. With their two wins over Lambuth (8-23), the Argonauts improved to 30-4 this season and extended their school record winning streak to 16 games.
GAME ONE: West Florida 6, Lambuth 2
Senior Jason Postill (Orlando, Fla./Tallahassee CC) got the start on the mound for West Florida in game one and threw five innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out five. Postill remained undefeated and improved to 8-0 on the season. Zach Jadofsky (Chipley, Fla./Enterprise State CC), Jordan Rasinski (Winter Springs, Fla./UCF) and Shane Waller (Bryceville, Fla./Northwest Florida State) combined to pitch the final four innings and gave up just two hits while striking out seven.
The Argos struck first in the first inning off back-to-back RBI hits by seniors Dustin Lawley (Bessemer, Ala./Wallace State CC-Hanceville) and Greg Pron (Daphne, Ala./Daphne HS), making the score 2-0. West Florida tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second after three errors by the Eagles plated Korey Domenick (Festus, Mo./Mineral Area) and Eric Kroll (Pace, Fla./Pace HS), giving UWF a comfortable 4-0 lead.
Lambuth tallied its first run in the top of the fourth when Cable McMinn ripped an RBI double down the left field line to cut into UWF’s lead 4-1. The Argonauts answered back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring twice off some aggressive base running by Taye Larry (Panama City, Fla./Wallace State CC-Dothan) and a solo home run by Lawley, making the score 6-1.
The Eagles scored another run in the top of the fifth off a RBI single by Daniel Saxson that brought in Tanner Hoechlin, Both the Argos and Eagles were held scoreless the remainder of the game, as UWF held on to win game one 6-2.
Lambuth starter Mack Murray lasted 6.1 innings and took the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits and four walks.
GAME TWO: West Florida 22, Lambuth 6
In game two, Lambuth struck first when Eric Wilson came in to score on a throwing error by the Argonauts, putting the Eagles up 1-0. The Argonauts answered with two runs in the first, 10 in the second, four in the third, four in the fourth and two in the sixth. Junior Ben Hawkins (Rome, Ga./Wallace State CC-Hanceville) got the start for UWF and allowed one unearned run while striking out nine in four innings. Hawkins (8-0) matched Postill with his eighth win of the year.
The Argonauts racked up 23 hits in the dominant offensive performance in game two, led by junior second baseman Justin Bennett (Roswell, Ga./Roswell HS) with four hits in five at bats. Senior designated hitter Zach Taylor (Vandiver, Ala./Wallace State CC-Hanceville) provided the power, hitting his first two home runs of the year and driving in eight runs, including four on a grand slam. Five other Argonauts had multi-hit games.
Lambuth starter Tyler Burke took the loss, allowing eight runs in 1.1 innings.
