LAKELAND, Fla. – The West Florida men’s soccer team held on to win 4-3 after leading 4-0 in the first half at Florida Southern on Sunday in Lakeland, Fla. The Argos' first half run was highlighted by three consecutive goals in a span of less than two minutes, and the team held strong through the last minutes as the Moccasins tried to rally back.
The Argos took an early lead when Dillon Gallet (Lafayette, La./Lafayette HS) scored his first collegiate goal on a counter attack off a corner kick in the 17th minute, assisted by Stephen Munoz (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary HS). The Argos continued to find scoring opportunities with the help of seven corner kicks in the first half.
Matthew Aldred (Eastbourne, England/Loughborough (St. Bede's Senior School), Andre Verardi (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Embry-Riddle (Colegio Anchieta) and Jason Ream (Newton, Ala./Ridgecrest Christian School) each recorded goals in less than two minutes of one another in the first half. Aldred scored his second goal of the season after flicking the ball over a defenders head to himself and found the open net. Verardi netted his first goal of the year after he rebounded his own shot and placed it in the open net while Ream capped West Florida’s scoring, blasting a goal that was assisted by Jack Salafrio ( Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) and Verardi. Both Verardi and Ream scored just seconds after subbing onto the pitch.
The Mocs got on the board in the 43rd minute when Viktor Bakkioui found the back of the net, taking the game to halftime 4-1. Florida Southern came out in the second half determined to rally back and cut the Argos lead in half, 4-2, in the 55th minute when Zach Hofstetter scored after he gathered the rebounded shot of Bakkioui. Hofstetter scored his second goal of the game in the 81st minute giving West Florida just a one goal lead, 4-3.
The Mocs continued to blast away on goal and had a golden opportunity in the 89th minute. West Florida keeper Stuart McCrory (Prattville, Ala./Prattville HS) found himself out of goal after making an amazing save. The Mocs ripped the potential tying shot which was knocked away at the last moment on a highlight save by Trey Kramer (New Orleans, La./Jesuit HS), securing the Argos victory 4-3.
