HOOVER, Ala. – The West Florida men’s cross country team came up just short of winning its third league title at the Gulf South Conference Championships on Saturday morning, finishing second out of seven teams. Alabama-Huntsville took home the trophy, while the Argonauts placed second and had five runners earn All-GSC honors.
“The guys finished a solid second,” said head coach John Bergen. “We’re a little disappointed that we didn’t challenge UAH as much as we thought we could, but we still have the NCAA regional meet to really show what we can do. We’re proud that we had a solid place and are in position to run well at regionals.”
UAH (17) paced the seven-team field, as the Argonauts (55) placed second thanks to three top 10 finishers. West Alabama came finished in third place with 78 points, followed by West Georgia and Valdosta State in a tie for fourth at 128. UAH had the top four finishers, including individual winner Josh Moshier at 26:28.
Juniors Dominique Sykes (Orange Park, Fla./Orange Park HS) and Martinique Sykes (Orange Park, Fla./Orange Park HS) were UWF’s top finishers, placing fifth (26:49) and sixth (26:57), respectively. Senior Eddie Pagan crossed the line at 27:06 and finished 10th. The UWF trio earned All-GSC first team honors for their top 10 finishes.
“I’m very proud that our three veterans finished in the top 10 and earned all-conference,” said Bergen. “Those three have had great seasons, and I’m proud that they were recognized for their hard work.”
A pair of freshmen, Chris Roach (Ponte Vedra, Fla./Nease HS) and Cody Haden (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS) also finished in the top 20. Roach crossed the line at 27:32 and placed 16th, while Haden was just behind in 18th place at 27:34. Roach and Haden earned All-GSC second team honors for placing in the top 20.
“I’ve been very happy with our freshmen,” explained Bergen. “They’ve worked very hard this year. Their performance today shows that we’ve got a good team to build on, and I’m very proud of them.”
Senior Jared Black also posted a solid finish, placing 23rd at 27:57. He was followed in the UWF lineup by freshmen Brandon Skeie (West Creek, N.J./Southern Regional HS) and Roman Kowalski (Pensacola, Fla./Catholic HS). Skeie finished 25th and posted a time of 28:05, while Kowalski was 31st at 28:38.
The Argonauts will have two weeks to train for the NCAA South Regional hosted by Tampa on Nov. 5. The top two finishing teams at the regional meet will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Spokane, Wash. on Nov. 19. For information on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
