PENSACOLA, Fla. – Peter Connole scored a career high 18 points as the University of West Florida men’s basketball team earned its first Gulf South Conference victory of the year with an 84-67 trouncing of Delta State.
Jamar Moore (Coolidge, Ga./Faulkner State CC) aided Connole in the effort with his third double-double in four games, scoring 17 points and snatching 11 rebounds as the Argos move to 10-5 on the year and .500 in the GSC at 1-1.
The Argonauts led Delta State (4-7, 0-2 GSC) most of the way, grabbing the lead for good just eight minutes into the first half on a Connole (Orlando, Fla./Pine Castle Christian HS) layup. A 6-0 run by the Argos then made it 22-15 with 6:39 to play before two more Connole points gave UWF their biggest lead of the half at 31-23.
After taking a 31-26 halftime lead, the Argos came out to a 9-2 run in the first three minutes of the second half to jump up 42-30. A pair of Moore free throws then gave UWF the 14 point advantage with 9:15 left as the Argos cruised to a 17 point win.
Connole was a perfect 7-of-7 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw-line as the Argos put in their fourth highest point total of the year. Marquis Mathis (Columbus, Ohio/Cincinnati State CC) was also good for 17 points during the win with Martell Buie (Orlando, Fla./Wallace St. CC-Hanceville) putting in 14.
