MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RACES IN THE 3000 METERS AT SOUTH ALABAMA INVITATIONAL

Roman Kowalski Runs a Team Best 9:07 in the 3000 Meters

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of West Florida men’s cross country team continued its spring racing season by competing in the 3000 meters at the University of South Alabama Invitational on Saturday in Mobile. The meet was held in strong wind conditions, which aided throwing events and sprints, but slowed the performances in the distance events. Despite the conditions, the 3000 meters race was one of the most exciting events of the day.

Freshman Roman Kowalski (Pensacola) was the top Argonaut finisher in 9:07, which earned him fourth place. UWF junior Dominique Sykes (Orange Park) was also in the top 10 finishers with a 9:17 performance. With 24 runners competing in the event, the lead group of six runners, including Kowalski and Sykes, came through the halfway point within one second of each other at 4:30. Only eventual winner Max Miller of Tulane was able to hold the 9 minute pace, as he finished in 8:57.

Kowalski was leading the race through the 2000 meter mark, until Miller outkicked the field. Besides Kowalski and Sykes, two other Argonauts also raced in the event. Freshman Cody Haden (Navarre) raced to a 9:34 performance, while freshmen Brandon Skeie (West Creek, N.J.) turned in a 9:52 race time.

The Argonauts will finish the spring season by participating in the elite War Eagle Invitational hosted by Auburn University next weekend. A recap of UWF’s participation in the Invitational will be available on GoArgos.com. For information on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
