MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 2-ranked and No. 1-seeded West Florida men’s tennis team (22-2) advanced to the finals of the Gulf South Conference (GSC) Men’s Tennis Championships today with a bye in the quarterfinals and a 5-0 victory over No. 4-seed and No. 38-ranked Delta State in the semifinals. UWF will face Valdosta State on Sunday morning in the finals.
West Florida has won its last 13 matches. The Argos were a perfect 7-0 in GSC play during the regular season and earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament. With the loss, Delta State falls to 9-10 this season.
West Florida swept doubles. At the No. 1 position, Argonauts Kevin Ducros (Aix-en-Provence, France) and Bruno Savi (Santana do Livramento, Brazil) teamed to defeat Florian Mondoloni and Guillaome Lacour, 8-2. Ducros and Savi form the No. 2 doubles duo in the nation. Leandro Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Andrey Pozhidaev (Sochi, Russia), who form the No. 17 doubles tandem in the nation, tallied an 8-3 victory over Christian Serrano and Tobias Rausch at No. 2. UWF’s duo of Mike Lue (Richmond Hill, Ontario) and Domenico Sano (Macaray, Venezuela) defeated Clement Deprecow and Sebastian Rajaonary, 8-2, at No. 3.
UWF took a 3-0 lead into singles. Pozhidaev, who is ranked No. 21 nationally in singles, dropped just one game in his 6-1, 6-0 victory over Rausch at the No. 3 line. UWF freshman Elio Latela (Sydney, Australia) defeated Serrano, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 5 position. With two singles victories, the Argos clinched the overall victory and all remaining matches were halted.
West Florida will play for the GSC championship title tomorrow. UWF has won the GSC eight times. The No. 1-seeded Argos will face No. 2-seeded Valdosta State, which is currently listed as the No. 5 team in the nation. No. 2 West Florida defeated No. 5 Valdosta State, the defending national champions, 8-1, on March 30th in Pensacola.
