CALERA, Ala. – For the sixth time in seven years, the West Florida women’s golf team was crowned Gulf South Conference champions at Timberline Golf Club on Tuesday. The Argonauts outpaced West Georgia and Christian Brothers to win the trophy, and UWF freshman Camila Sevillano (Cali, Colombia/La Arboleda) placed first individually to win medalist honors.
The Argonauts (333-324 - 657) finished the tournament 89-over par, outpacing second place West Georgia (350-335 - 685) by 28 strokes. Christian Brothers (379-367 - 746) finished the tournament in third place.
Sevillano’s (80-78 - 158) tournament title was the first for an Argonaut since Natalia Espinosa earned medalist honors at the 2010 GSC Championships. The freshman became the fifth Argonaut to place first at the conference tournament, and all five have come in the last six years.
Freshman Aimee Paterson (Sherfield on Loddon, England/Queen Mary's) placed third overall, finishing the two rounds 23-over par (83-82 - 165). Senior Jenny Lines (Birmingham, Ala./Spring Hill) (82-85 - 167) and junior Agustina Cocha (Salta, Argentina/Colegio Santa Maria) (88-79 - 167) tied for fourth place at 25-over. All four Argonauts earned spots on the GSC All-Tournament Team for placing in the top five individually.
UWF will now wait for the NCAA Division II regional tournament selections to be announced on April 30. UWF will host Super Regional Two at Stonebrook Golf Club in Pace, Fla. on May 6-8. For information on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
