SKILLMAN, N.J. – The No. 9-ranked and back-to-back Gulf South Conference Champion University of West Florida women’s tennis team (21-6) continues to be listed as the No. 3 team in the South Region in the latest regional portion of the Campbell’s/ITA College Tennis Rankings, it was announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) today. UWF is also represented by two singles players and one doubles team in the regional rankings.
West Florida is the No. 3 team in the South Region. Barry, which is 22-0 this season, is the No. 1 team in the South Region and is followed by Lynn and UWF. Rollins is the No. 4 team, and Saint Leo rounds out the top five. Florida Southern and Florida Tech are listed at Nos. 6 and 7, respectively, and are followed by Gulf South Conference (GSC) foe Valdosta State at No. 8. Nova Southeastern and Palm Beach Atlantic are Nos. 9 and 10. The Argos have defeated Rollins and Florida Southern this season. UWF defeated VSU twice, once during the regular season and a 5-2 victory in the final match of the GSC Women’s Tennis Championships this weekend. Barry and Lynn both recorded victories over the Argos during the regular season. UWF has not faced Saint Leo, Florida Tech, Nova Southeastern or Palm Beach Atlantic this season. Barry, Lynn, UWF, Rollins, Florida Southern and Florida Tech are amongst the 48 participating schools in the NCAA Championships.
West Florida has two singles players listed in the top 20 in the South Region. UWF senior Barbara Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) is the No. 11 player in the South. Oliveira is the No. 29 player in the nation. She is 9-8 this season at the No. 1 singles line. Oliveira was also the No. 11 player in the South in the previous regional rankings, which were released on March 21st. UWF junior Mariana Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil) moved up one spot to No. 19 in the South. Sonnervig is 12-9 this season, including 7-4 at the No. 2 position.
One UWF doubles team is list in the South Region rankings. Argonauts Caitlyn Baines (Ft. Walton Beach) and Sheila Smiley (Richmond Hill, Ontario) form the No. 6 doubles team in the South. The duo is 16-4 this season, with all matches being played at the No. 1 line. The tandem was also ranked No. 6 in the previous rankings released on March 21st. Baines and Smiley are the 18 doubles team in the nation.
UWF is the No. 9 team in the nation. New national rankings will be released on May 2nd. West Florida won the GSC Women’s Tennis Championships for the second straight year this past weekend. The Argos have won their last 10 matches.
West Florida, which is the No. 3 seed in the South Region, will play No. 6-seed Florida Southern on April 30th in the opening round of South Regional #2 of the NCAA Championships. The host of the regional is No. 2-seed Lynn, which is located in Boca Raton. First serve is set for 2 p.m. eastern. Results and a recap of the match will be available on GoArgos.com.
