INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The West Florida men’s golf team will be one of 80 Division II teams competing for a national championship, as selections were announced for the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships on Friday. The Argonauts will compete in the South/Southeast Regional in Conover, N.C. on May 7-9.
The South/Southeast Regional will include 10 teams from the South Region and 10 from the Southeast, as well as four individuals from each region from teams not advancing. West Florida will enter the tournament as the No. 5 ranked team from the South Region. The top five teams from each regional site and the top two individuals not on an advancing team will qualify to compete for the national title in Simpsonville, Ky. on May 15-19.
The 20 teams at the South/Southeast Regional will be fighting for five spots at the national championships, and 14 of those 20 teams are ranked in the top 25 in the most recent Golf World/Nike Golf Division II College Coaches’ Poll. Leading the way in the coaches’ poll from the South and Southeast regions are No. 1 Barry, No. 2 Nova Southeastern, No. 4 North Alabama, No. 5 Lynn, No. 7 West Florida and No. 8 UNC Pembroke.
The Argonauts are coming off a second place finish at the Gulf South Conference Championships. UWF has won two tournaments this year and earned three runner-up finishes. The last time the Argonauts qualified for the national championships was in 2008 when they won the program’s second Division II national championship.
