SKILLMAN, N.J. – The University of West Florida men’s tennis team continues to be ranked as the No. 2 team in the nation in the latest edition of the Campbell’s/ITA Division II Men’s Tennis Rankings, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced today. In addition, three Argos are listed in the top 20 in singles and two UWF doubles teams are ranked in the top 25.
West Florida retains the No. 2 spot in the top 50. Armstrong Atlantic continues to hold on to the No. 1 position. UWF’s only loss to a Division II opponent this season came at the hands of Armstrong Atlantic on Feb. 25th. Lynn, Barry and Columbus State hold the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 spots, respectively. UWF has defeated all three of these teams this season.
UWF is 25-2 this season. After going a perfect 7-0 in regular season conference play, UWF won the GSC Men’s Tennis Championships in Montgomery, Ala. This past weekend, the Argos won NCAA South Regional #1 to advance to the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky. UWF has won its last 16 matches.
Three singles players are ranked in the top 50. UWF junior Kevin Ducros (Aix-en-Provence, France) climbed two spots to No. 7. Ducros, a three-time member of the All-Gulf South Conference (GSC) Men’s Tennis Team, is 11-6 this season, including 5-0 at the No. 2 singles position. UWF sophomore Bruno Savi (Santana do Livramento, Brazil) moved up one to No. 11. Savi, the GSC Player of the Year, has been ranked as high as No. 10 in the nation this season. In his first season as an Argonaut, he is 17-2 overall and has won his last 14 matches. West Florida senior Andrey Pozhidaev (Sochi, Russia) is ranked No. 19. He was also No. 19 in the preseason edition of the poll and was No. 21 in the previous rankings, which were released on March 28th. He is 20-2 this season, including 7-0 at the No. 2 line. Pozhidaev, who is a four-time member of the All-GSC team, is currently riding a 13-match winning streak.
Two of West Florida’s doubles teams are listed in the top 25 in the nation. Savi and Ducros held steady at No. 2. The duo is 22-4 this season, with all matches being played at the No. 1 position. Pozhidaev and Leandro Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) team to form the No. 18 doubles tandem in the nation. The duo has been ranked has high as No. 17 this season. Ferreira and Pozhidaev are 20-3 this season, with all matches being played at the No. 2 position.
The Argos will face Nebraska Kearney in the Round of 16 of the NCAA Championships. First serve is set for 5 p.m. eastern on May 16th in Louisville, Ky.
