PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Pensacola Sports Association (PSA) and the University of West Florida will host the 2012 NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball Championships at the UWF Field House on Dec. 6-8. The two organizations have partnered to host NCAA national championship events across multiple sports, and 2012 will be the second time the Division II volleyball finals come to Pensacola.
The winners of eight regional tournaments will advance to the finals in Pensacola. The national quarterfinals will take place on Dec. 6, with the semifinals following on Dec. 7 and the finals on Dec. 8. Regional competition will take place on Nov. 29-Dec. 2 at campus sites in the eight regions.
“We are very excited about this opportunity to again showcase Pensacola and UWF’s facilities to the qualifying schools,” said PSA Executive Director Ray Palmer. “We’re fortunate to have such a great working relationship with UWF which allows us to win the hosting bids for these prestigious NCAA athletic events.”
In 2006, the PSA and UWF hosted the NCAA Division II Fall Championships Festival which featured national championships in men’s and women’s cross country, women’s field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball. In 2011, the PSA and UWF partnered again to host the Division II men’s and women’s soccer national championships played at Escambia County’s Ashton Brosnaham Soccer Complex.
“The PSA has been a great partner in recruiting these national events,” said UWF Athletic Director Dave Scott. “Only a select number of communities get the opportunity to host NCAA championships. We’re looking forward to once again showcasing UWF and the Pensacola community.”
The UWF volleyball team has earned bids to the NCAA tournament each of the last six years, reaching the regional finals twice. The Argonauts won their fourth straight Gulf South Conference championship in 2011 and have lost just three GSC matches over the last five seasons.
The Pensacola Sports Association, originally incorporated in 1955, is a private not-for-profit agency and one of the oldest sports commissions in the country. Signature events produced by the PSA include the Double Bridge Run 15k, the Senior Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet, the High School All-Star Games, and the PSA Annual Awards Banquet.
