HIGA EARNS GSC ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Six student-athletes from the University of West Florida were honored as a part of the Gulf South Conference Spring All-Academic Team announced on Tuesday.  The UWF men’s tennis team led the way with three selections, while men’s golf, women’s golf and women’s tennis each had one selection.  The GSC also announced the league’s academic honor roll for the spring season, and UWF ranked third with 36 total selections.

The all-academic team is selected by GSC sports information directors and faculty athletic representatives.  Nominated student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 of better and may not be freshmen or first-year transfers.  Selection is based on athletic and academic achievements.  Student-athletes selected to the academic honor roll must have a minimum GPA of 3.00 and have seen action against outside competition.

The Argos men’s tennis trio earning all-academic honors included seniors Sean Gunnels (Mobile, Ala.) and Mike Lue (Richmond Hill, Ontario) and sophomore Domenico Sano (Macaray, Venezuela).  Gunnels finished his collegiate career with a 3.59 GPA with a degree in Pre-Professional Biology, and Lue posted a 3.41 GPA while majoring in Information Technology.  Gunnels and Lue were both repeat selections.  Sano, an Accounting major, made the team in his first year eligible with a 3.23 GPA.

Ryan Black (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) represented the Argos men’s golf team on the GSC All-Academic list, posting a 3.20 GPA in his senior year while majoring in Sports Management.  From the women’s golf team, junior Agustina Cocha (Salta, Argentina) earned the nod with a 3.43 GPA in International Studies.  Finally, Naomi Higa (Córdoba, Argentina) from women’s tennis earned the award with a 3.60 GPA in Finance.
