KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Second-ranked West Florida's quest for a third consecutive national championship nearly ended on Tuesday in the Round of 16 on Wednesday. Vivian Chhetri's three set win over Cristian Easton was the deciding victory in a 5-4 win over seventh-ranked Armstrong Atlantic. West Florida (25-6) will advance to Thursday's quarterfinals against either Nebraska-Kearney or Northwood (Mich.). Armstrong Atlantic finishes the season at 18-7.
After Armstrong Atlantic's Paul Bishop upset 27th ranked Alberto Torchia in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3)) to even the match score at 4-4, Chhetri dropped the second set before rallying for the three set victory. It was the second time this season that West Florida has defeated Armstrong Atlantic by a 5-4 score. The Argonauts defeated the Pirates on Feb. 25 in Valdosta, Ga. by the same score.
