ORLANDO, Fla. - Junior Federico Damus (Posadas, Argentina/Roque Gonzalez Institute) finished tied for second to help lead West Florida to a third place finish at the second annual Coker College Invitational at Orange County National. The event featured 17 NCAA Division II schools from the Southeast and one NAIA school.
West Florida finished the tournament with a one-under 575, three shots behind tournament champion Valdosta State (-4, 572). The Argonauts were one of three schools to finish the tournament under par.
After shooting a 69 on Monday, Damus posted a second round 71 to finish the tournament with a four-under 140. He finished four strokes behind the individual champion, Josh Tompkins of Valdosta State, who shot an eight-under 136.
Two other Argonauts earned top 20 finishes. Senior Matthew Berzovich (Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley HS) shot a second round 71 to finish with an even 144 in 16th place. Junior Matthew Galloway (Valrico, Fla./Durant HS) knocked one stroke off of his first round total with a second round 72 to finish tied for 19th with a one-over 145.
Also participating for West Florida was sophomore Brian Lawrence (Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola Junior College), who finished tied for 27th with a two-over 146. Senior Leonardo Di Marino (Laferrere, Argentina/Jacksonville State Univ.) shot a seven-over 151 to place tied for 58th.
West Florida's next tournament will be the AFLAC/Cougar Invitational in Columbus, Ga. The tournament will be held from Oct. 2-3.
