Argonauts fall to Choctaws in second straight double-overtime game

West Florida men's basketball team falls to Mississippi College 92-88 on Saturday afternoon

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men's basketball team fell to Gulf South Conference opponent Mississippi College 92-88 in the team's second straight double-overtime game on Saturday. West Florida (7-16, 3-14 GSC) had four players foul out of the game and were out-rebounded 61-41 in the loss.

"These kids are battling, they are really trying hard to do everything we are asking of them," head coach Bob Stinnett said. "We got into foul trouble tonight but our guys didn't quit tonight."

UWF sophomore Jason Laatsch (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian School) led the Argonauts with 23 points.

"It was a tough loss tonight," Laatsch said. "Some guys had to play more minutes than they are used to tonight, especially with it being our second straight double-overtime game. I'm proud of how we battled. I think we had chances to win but they shot 44 free throws and we shot 18, and usually the team that shoots more free throws wins."

West Florida led by 12 points with just under 10 minutes left in the first half, and took a 38-33 lead into the locker room at half time. The Argonauts held the Choctaws to 27.3% shooting from the field in the first half.

Mississippi College tied the game at 69 points apiece with 35 seconds left in the second half. UWF senior Demetrius Moore (Paxton, Fla./Paxton HS) missed a potential game winner with five seconds left on the clock.

West Florida trailed by three points with just over one minute left in the first overtime period before Laatsch hit a crucial three-pointer to push the game into double overtime with 14 seconds left on the clock.

Mississippi College took a three-point lead with 2:25 left in the second overtime and did not relinquish the lead as West Florida dropped their 14th conference game of the season.

UWF will next face Christian Brothers on the road on February 12 at 7 p.m. CT before wrapping up the road trip on Sunday, February 14 against Union (Tenn.) at 4 p.m. CT.
