Mike Jeffcoat   |   Head Coach

Alma Mater: West Florida '91

Office Phone: 474-2890

Baseball: Mike Jeffcoat

A three-time Gulf South Conference coach of the Year and the 2011 ABCA and NCBWA National Coach of the Year, West Florida coach Mike Jeffcoat has turned UWF into a nationally-recognized program since taking the helm from his mentor and previous head coach Jim Spooner.  In 2011, his sixth year, Jeffcoat led the program to its first baseball national championship in school history.

Jeffcoat was promoted to head coach on Aug. 8, 2005, becoming the fourth head coach in the program’s 31-year history.  Through the 2014 season, the Argonauts have posted a record of 326-172 (.655 winning percentage) with Jeffcoat at the helm and have five NCAA South Regional appearances in the past eight seasons.

In his second season as head coach in 2007, the Argonauts won the program’s first ever Gulf South Conference championship and earned the school’s first NCAA Tournament berth.  The team also set a new school record with 43 wins, and Jeffcoat was named GSC Coach of the Year.

Three years later in 2010, UWF went 11-3 in conference play and won the GSC East Division regular season championship, the third in school history.  The Argos also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in four seasons in 2010.

In 2011, the team accomplished numerous program firsts, including an NCAA Division II national championship.  The Argonauts finished the year 52-9 (.852) and set school records in wins, conference wins (17) and consecutive wins (22).  The team also earned the program’s first No. 1 national ranking, hosted its first NCAA regional, and advanced to its first national tournament.

In 2012 Jeffcoat and the Argos entered the season ranked No. 1 in the nation for the first time in program history. He led the team to a 35-19 overall record while going 20-8 at Jim Spooner Field.

In 2013, UWF finished the season ranked No. 5 in the nation, and Jeffcoat reached the NCAA South Regional for the fourth straight season and for the fifth time in program history. In addition, the Argos broke their own GSC fielding percentage record of .9709 (2011) with a .9714 percentage in 2013.

In 2014, UWF ranked No. 2 nationally for five weeks and ranked in the top 10 in 13 consecutive polls. The Argos finished the season 34-11 overall and 22-7 in the Gulf South Conference, tying for second in the regular-season standings.

UWF has advanced to the GSC Tournament eight times under Jeffcoat and the NCAA Tournament five times.  The Argonauts have compiled a record of 34-23 in the postseason under Jeffcoat, highlighted by the 2011 Division II national championship.

Jeffcoat’s players have earned numerous individual honors, including six All-Americans and 21 all-region players.  He has also coached 59 All-GSC players, including at least eight all-conference from 2010-12.  Jeffcoat himself has earned numerous awards, including three GSC Coach of the Year honors (2007, 201, 2014) and National Coach of the Year awards in 2011 from both the ABCA and NCBWA.

Not only have Jeffcoat’s players received individual recognition, but they have advanced to play professionally after their college careers.  The Argonauts have had 11 total players drafted by major league teams during Jeffcoat’s nine years as head coach, including five players in the 2011 season and three in 2014.

Before taking over as head coach prior to the 2006 season, Jeffcoat was UWF’s pitching coach for five years.  West Florida has become known for its pitching prowess largely thanks to Jeffcoat’s influence over the last 11 years.  In 2003, his pitching staff finished the year with a team ERA of 2.70, leading all NCAA Division II schools in that category.  UWF also had seven pitchers earn spots on the GSC All-Decade Team, announced in the summer of 2010.

In 1995, Jeffcoat made his debut as a head coach at Alabama Southern Community College, where he spent five years and compiled a record of 107-138 (.437).  In just his first year as a head coach, he took the team to a second place finish in the conference and a third place finish at the state tournament.  He coached two first team All-Americans at Alabama Southern, including Mitch Garner, who went on to play at UWF under head coach Jim Spooner.

Jeffcoat was a standout reliever for the Argonauts in 1990-91, totaling nine saves in two seasons.  In 1991 he finished with an ERA of 1.99, which ranks 10th in school history among pitchers with 30 innings pitched or more.  The 1991 team also led the Southern States Conference in ERA.  The Argos set a new school record with 39 wins in 1990 and followed with 40 more in 1991, a mark that would stand until Jeffcoat led the 2007 team to 43 wins and the GSC championship as head coach.

Jeffcoat signed with the St. Louis Cardinals after graduating from UWF, and he pitched for the Cardinals’ rookie league affiliates in the Appalachian League and the Arizona League in 1991.  Before transferring to UWF, Jeffcoat pitched and played third base for two years at Chipola Junior College under head coach Bobby Pierce, now the head coach at Troy University.

Jeffcoat returned to his alma mater in 1993 and served as a graduate assistant coach for two seasons. With his guidance, the Argonauts reached postseason play both years and grabbed UWF’s last Southern States Championship in 1994. After graduating with his master’s degree, he made a one-year stop at Pensacola Junior College as a pitching coach.

Jeffcoat received his bachelor’s degree in Sports Science from UWF in 1991 and his master’s in Sports Science in 1994. Jeffcoat is married to the former Ginger Tidwell and they have three children: Trent (14), Josef (10) and Jordan (7).
